A Birth Story: Jason Thomas

Hey there,

I know I've disappeared for a little bit, but I am back and with a new baby!  It took me a couple of days, but I finally got this done before everything became a blur.

Here goes Jason's Birth Story:

At 38 weeks pregnant, I began to have contractions. I knew they weren’t Braxton Hicks because they were a bit strong, and frequent but not consistent. On Thursday of Week 38 I was having contractions 5-7 minutes apart. We decided to head to the hospital. I called my Mother-in-law and she came to our apartment to pick up Benjamin. He was very excited to be going over to his grandma’s house.  We hugged and kissed him, and our hearts were at peace as he left us. At this point I was pretty calm and collected, just breathing through the pain. As I walked into the hospital I had to stop a couple of times because of the contractions.  As it turns out though, once we were in triage with all the monitors connected, all pain disappeared.  Well not completely, I had like one contraction while I was there. The nurse simply said I was 1 cm dilated, and sent us home.  The contractions did not completely stop however, they were just very far apart. So far apart that we didn’t even bother to time them. I was fine being sent home, but I did not know that I would basically spend 10 days contracting. 10 DAYS!!

It was a tough week, and honestly I do not know how I managed.  God definitely helped me through it. The next week, on Wednesday I made my way to doctor’s office for an appointment. I was now 39 weeks pregnant. I explained to my doctor everything that had occurred and how I had been in pain since the day I went to the hospital.  My doctor suggested a cervical stretch to see if that would help with the process, and I agreed.  I knew this would mean that my baby would probably be born on Halloween day, but to be quite honest, I just wanted the baby to born already! Mother’s will understand the desperation.  The "stretch and sweep" did not hurt to me, although I heard other women say it was quite painful for them. I felt nothing after my appointment. I headed home and everything was perfectly fine, until about an hour later.

About an hour later I began to feel pain.  My whole body was in pain. I felt pain in my lower back and weakness in my legs.  The contractions began to be more frequent and slightly stronger each time. This time it felt more real.  Once again we called my In-laws to come and get Benjamin. This time we left Benji with a heavy heart.  As we kissed him we said our goodbye’s, and he seemed as though he was ready to start crying.  Something that we rarely see in our son, and it broke our hearts. We headed to the hospital, and there I was told I was 4 cm dilated, which apparently is not enough to get admitted.  So they sent me to walk for an hour.  A LONG brutal hour.  We walked the halls, and went up and down the stairs, and when the hour was over I was still  at 4 cm.  The doctor gave us a choice of staying in the nurse’s triage for 4 hours to see if anything would change or to go home and come back when we felt it was time.  Triage is not a room and it is a very uncomfortable place, so we decided to go home, and wait it out.   In our minds we thought we would be back the same night, but we were so wrong.

Thursday came and I was still contracting about 8 to 11 minutes apart and getting stronger each time.  Friday came and still the same thing.  I asked my sister to come and stay with me.  I was certain the baby would be born that weekend and I could not bear to send Benji away again.

My sister came the next morning, Saturday.  She began to time my contractions, Just like last time.  When Ruben came home from work they were 5-7 minutes apart.  He asked if I wanted to head for the hospital, but I was fearful of being sent home again.  My exact words to him were “I am not going to the hospital until my water breaks or I am dying from the pain.” I managed to convince him to go to church service, and I stayed home with my sister. When Ruben arrived back from service my contractions began to get closer about 3-5 minutes apart and they were strong. Even so, I still did not want to go to the hospital. So, we figured we would try and get some rest. So we kissed our baby boy good night, and headed to bed.

Around midnight I felt a contraction that literally made me get up and cry from the pain, and that is when I knew it was time to go to the hospital. I let my sister know, while Ruben gathered our stuff.  I was not calm and collected this time. The hospital is only 15 minutes away but It honestly felt like the longest ride of life. I just stared at the raindrops falling on the windshield thinking it would distract me, and I wouldn't realize how "long" the drive was. Ruben was trying to get there as fast as he could while still driving carefully and holding my hand as I breathed through every painful contraction. We finally arrived, and then the walk toward the birthing center seemed to also take forever. When the nurse checked me she said “You are 5 cm dilated, I will order your blood work and get things going.” It was a bittersweet moment because I knew what was to come, but I also knew this meant we would meet our baby soon.

After the blood work, I changed into the hospital gown and we were taken to our room. I was asked if I would like the epidural.  Originally, and since everyone had said the 2nd child is born faster, I had plan to go all natural, but after so many days of pain I changed my mind.  I just wanted to rest and I accepted the epidural.  The anesthesiologist took about an hour to arrive in our room. Let me tell you, an hour feels like an eternity when you are feeling extreme labor pains every 3 minutes.  I held my husband's hand through every contraction, as he and the nurse coached me through the pain.  I looked over to husband and vowed never to have children, and then I blamed Eve for having eaten the fruit... But once the epidural took effect (it worked well this time), I was able to get some good ol' rest.

The doctor came in around 7 am, to break my water.  Unlike my first pregnancy, my water did not break on its own.  An hour later, around 8 am I was checked again and had dilated 9 cm.  The doctor came in, and he was informed this by my nurse.  The doctor stated that he had to go because the lady next door was ready to start pushing. As soon as he walked out, I got another strong contractions which brought on extreme pressure, and an strong urge to push. I knew it was time because I felt this with my first child. I looked over at the nurse and said “I really have the urge to push now".  She checked and indeed it was time. Right away, she sent for the doctor to come back.  However, she did not wait for the doctor to make his appearance, she quickly got everything ready and began to coach me through the pushing process. The doctor came in shortly after and he was surprised of the progressed I had made in such a a short time, and in a moment the room flooded with hospital people. The nurse coached me through 3 big pushes and just the like that the baby was out.
Ruben was at my side the whole time, like an amazing supportive husband, and It was 8:21 am on Sunday that Jason was finally born. As I saw him in the doctor’s hands, my eyes filled with tears.  He was finally born. I saw the nurses quickly take him across the room to clean him up, and I heard him cry. I extended my whole body to watch as they examined him, across the room with Ruben by his side.  I simply watched while the tears streamed down my face.  I could not believe that I was finally going to hold my baby boy. When they handed him to me, I held him so tight and close to my body, examining all his features.  I wanted him to feel all the love I had for him. He was the most beautiful baby I had ever seen. I looked up at Ruben and he was just looking at our baby, with daddy eyes. The room cleared just as fast as it had been filled, and all that was left was the three of us. There we were just staring at our baby.  Our baby was beautiful and perfect. Just like my Benji when he was born.

In a couple of hours Benjamin walked into the room with his auntie, Mary. As he walked in I said to him as he looked at his brother “Do you know who this is?” and he responded with “It’s Jason. He’s out of your belly!", and he kissed his brother.

God had given us another amazing gift. Yes I was in pain for a while, but overall everything went well. The doctor and nurses said I did very well breathing and pushing. There was no need for extra care and we even got to go home early.  The baby is very healthy, and I owe it all to God! I am grateful to Him for making us a family of four. I love my boys, all of them.
Welcome Jason Thomas.

33 weeks and a cray-crave

blogDSC_1298Today I am 33 weeks.  It has been quite a journey up to until now, but I'm very excited that we are getting closer to meeting our little Jason.

Something very different to my first pregnancy has happened. A cray-crave, I call it. A crazy craving.
This is something that really didn't happen in my first pregnancy. With the exception for that one
time that I mentioned to my sister in law that I wanted a Spicy Chicken from Wendy's and she went out of her way to get it for me.  Yep, she's a sweetie. (There is a whole other side of that girl, that you don't know about)

Well it so happens that my lovely sister Mary, posted a picture on Instagram.  It was a picture of her and her gal pals enjoying a Pumpkin Spice Latte.  Yes, a PSL!! I kid you not when I tell you that my mouth watered, and ever since then (since Sunday) I have been dying for a PSL.  So If you will excuse me, I am about to embark on a journey to fulfill my greatest craving.

Don't judge me.

Basically everything about my shower was amazing

I wanted to share my baby shower because, personally, I think it was amazing. My friend Yenni from the Pink Door Decor is the one responsible for all this amazing-ness. She really thought of everything from the Macaroons to the photo booth.  I'm very happy with everything she did, and she beyond anything I was expecting.

Alright let me tell you about the shower..

I know that most people believe in baby showers being a surprise, but I don't like surprises.  So I convinced Yenni to let me design the invitations, and she was fine with that.  So below is the invitation I made. Isn't it lovely? It's such a minor thing though, when you see all of the other decorations.

Let's Pretend, or not.

blogstairs

This week, I turned 30 weeks pregnant.  30!! where has the time gone?  How do I feel? Well...
Let's pretend I feel as put together as I look in these photographs.
Let's pretend I'm totally ready for Jason to arrive.
Let's not pretend that I was freaking out this week, and my sister in law had to give me a pep talk.
Let's not pretend I completely forgot what I need to pack in my hospital bag.
Let's  pretend I am mentally prepared to go through the process of giving birth again.

Or... let's not, I mean, can you ever REALLY be prepared for a new baby?

Right before the move

Dress: Forever21,   Top: H&M,   Shoes: Aldo,  Bag: Danier   Sunglasses: Forever21

We moved. We need more space now that we will be a family of four. Before the dreaded process, however, I took my little man out for a celebration. "Mom, i would like a coffee, and a cookie, please" he requested. It's not coffee, it's hot chocolate. He calls it coffee because it looks like the one mama drinks. I said to him "go sit down and I will bring it to you", he did so very obediently, and chose a small round table for two.

So there we were just him and me chit chatting. He was telling about all his friends, and why they were his friends, and very few selected best friends, besides his mom and dad, of course. He then pointed out the bird across the street, and explained to me how it was trying to find something to eat. If you know my son, you know that he is a chatterbox.

After he was done chatting, He looked at me and said "mom, we should go", and while he packed his cookie he stated "This is for my brother."

I'm not really sure when this growing up happened, but it makes me a little bit more confident that Benjamin is going to be an excellent brother, and the quite the photographer, as he took all the photographs of me. (with a little instruction, of course)

It's a ...

About two weeks ago, we headed to the "ultrasound of revelation", or so I called it. We were finally going to find out whether it was would a beautiful little girl with amazingly long hair, or a handsome little fellow with good ol'charm. At least that's what one expects.

After what seemed like an eternity of rubbing on my stomach, the nurse finally called my husband in and said "ok let me show you!"  We saw the little angel sucking it's little thumb, the little legs moving around, and then we saw proof of gender...and indeed... It's a BOY!!

Yes we are having another little boy. Soon we will be having another little one running around and we couldn't be more excited.  We love him already!!

They days couldn't come faster to meet our Baby Jason.

A baby is on it's way

We are excited to announce that we are having a baby, praise the Lord! If you read my previous post, then you already knew this important piece of information. If you didn't know, then SURPRISE! and if you knew already there is no harm in celebrating, once more. (Raise the roof!)

I suspected I was pregnant about 3 months ago.  When I finally got the nerve to take a test, my suspicions were confirmed. Although two positive pregnancy test most likely mean there is a little person growing inside of me, it wasn’t until we saw the ultrasound that it finally felt real.  Indeed it was in there, and moving around like it was having a grand fiesta. Our hearts melted as we saw those little tiny arms and legs just dancing away, and that is the moment we all fell in love with this baby. Now we just wait to finally hold that precious gift from God in our arms.  sigh.

On another note, Benjamin has been unexpectedly supportive. We thought he might act jealous, but no. On the contrary, he is being quite the exemplary big brother. He likes to rub my belly when I say it hurts, randomly give my belly kisses, and always asks if I am okay. The most interesting thing by far though, is that apparently Benji and the new baby are telepathic. Yup. Mr. Benj often knows the baby's concerns and will express them by saying things like “Mama, baby says he’s hungry” or “Mama, baby says she wants to come out” and “Mama, baby says quiet, he’s sleeping.”  But even with their telepathic abilities, Benji does not yet know if it is a girl or boy. This is why he alternates between “He” and “she”.  I"m pretty sure this makes him the smartest little boy ever!

Although I am only 17 weeks, this pregnancy has been extremely different, and more difficult from the previous. Nonetheless, I am ready to endure what is to come…

Sort of...

Not really...

Pray for me!

I was spoiled on Mother's Day, and I think I know why...

My Mother's Day went a little like this:

I woke up and was immediately congratulated by the hubby and a delightful little man who said to me "happy birthday".  Sure, it can be measured as a birthday, this year it almost felt like one. After breakfast while I cleaned up, Benjamin serenaded the birthday song to me, and Ruben so generously offered to clean my vehicle. Of course, I agreed! Who would deny such an offer? Seriously.

When he returned, Benjamin had already taken a bath and I was working on some things for our Mother's Day service at church. They quickly, and not so quietly, took off, and I was left alone at home.  No complaints there, quite honestly I get a lot done when alone.  I finished my tasks and as I was getting ready, I overheard the guys come in, and as I turned around there was a little shadow figure approaching. Benjamin walked through the doorway carrying a small white paper bag with the word “Fossil” printed in the center. I heard a subtle voice, in the not-so distance that whispered “Give it to mama, and say Happy Mother’s Days”, and as Benjamin handed it to me he once again repeated the words "happy birthday mama" accompanied by a sweet little hug. The bag contain two little boxes and inside them were a wallet and a watch, both camel colored and both I love very much. That was simply the beginning of my mother’s day.

Shortly after the gift, thanks giving, hugs and kisses we headed to music practice at church, in preparation for our service. Well we were in the middle of practicing a song, when I noticed through the door my mother, and sister walk in.  This doesn't happen too often, as they live rather far. So I ran off the stage, as when would do when excited, to greet them, and to my disbelief they greeted ME with chocolate, balloons, and a gorgeous Orchid! It was very sweet, and a complete surprise.

We had a wonderful service, lot’s of mothers, and many visitors.  After the service, we headed to the fellowship area to eat a meal prepared by our youth department.  They served us the most amazing soup I have ever tasted in my life. I cannot even describe how delicious it was.  Well once we were done indulging in this lovely meal, and as if I hadn't received enough already, my mother-in-law called me up in front of everyone (yes this happens to me a lot) and  had all the ladies come up and pray for me. She then handed me a card that was signed by all of them and a lovely bouquet of roses! Benjamin may have been right after all, it certainly felt like a birthday. I felt so much love around me.

I was thinking to myself, why was this mother’s Day so different from the rest, and the answer came to me like a kick in the stomach…

Literally.  Yes that is a small baby bump that you are seeing!
Details? coming soon!
